Our objective is to use only renewable energy by 2022.
Oriola’s energy usage includes lighting and ventilation in warehouse and office facilities, and our pharmacies in Sweden. Our energy consumption also includes the control of conditions required for pharmaceutical warehousing, such as cooling or heating.
Our goal is that all the energy we use will be renewable by 2022, and we systematically increase its share. For example, our Mölnlycke central warehouse in Sweden has used geothermal heating since 2015, and in 2020, solar panels were installed on the facility’s roof. We are also working to increase renewable energy usage in our pharmacy network in Sweden.
In 2020, we took a significant leap towards our goal, as our Mankkaa property in Espoo, Finland, switched to using renewable district heating. With this change, 92% of the energy used by the whole company comes from renewable sources, compared with 77% in 2019. The transition to renewable district heating also had a significant impact on our total CO2 emissions.
In addition to renewable energy sources, we are improving long-term energy efficiency in large warehouse and office facilities. In our Mankkaa distribution centre for example, we have increased energy efficiency and decreased energy consumption by 22% since 2018.
